The Warrior and the Gatekeeper: Understanding Hard Aspects Between Mars and Saturn

Because of their inherently incompatible natures and in order to properly harness their respective energies, one must learn to understand the relation between the malefic planets of Western astrology. For the purpose of this entry, the discussion will pertain, specifically, to the correlation and hard aspects that occur between Saturn and Mars.

In general, aspects between Saturn and Mars imply the necessity to align antithetical energies, namely, discipline with impulse, fear with courage, and control with assertion. Individuals with strong Saturn-Mars aspects will naturally gravitate towards scenarios where their proportion for strength, stamina, and overall endurance will be examined and extended, often to extremities involving near-shattering depths. Situations requiring endurance may manifest as emotional, physical, or mental, relative to other chart factors such as house placement, other corresponding planets, sign, and even degrees.

Conjunctions and hard aspects between Saturn and Mars are often associated with conflicting forces, often vacillating between two extremes: use of irrevocable self-will, determination, and aggressive domination versus paralyzing inability. Furthermore, the more more pugnacious presentations of Saturn-Mars occur when, in an individual’s chart, Venus appears debilitated, weakly positioned or in harsh aspect(s), and overall, difficult to access.

Individuals with Saturn-Mars aspects will often find themselves in positions where they need to exert a certain level of discipline and/ or control over a situation. Furthermore, hey may find themselves in situations where they are either being dominated or are themselves exerting a sense of domination over others. Ultimately, this merging signals a lesson in authoritative equilibrium: contacting one’s source of inner authority without the need to seek supremacy or resignation from others.

At best, Saturn-Mars delineates a sense of vigilant bravery and the inclination to master the will in order to achieve and overcome obstacles. This aspect is suitable for situations that require courage, resilience, endurance, order, and control. The Saturn-Mars can take advantage of every moment in the implementation of a task.

The hard aspects of Mars-Saturn are summarized below.

Mars conjunct Saturn: Immense lust for power and immeasurable ambition. Ultimate power is denied as a result of the abuse of power in past lifetimes.

Mars square Saturn: Struggle between instinctual desires and the soul. Consciousness is transformed as a result of suffering and hardship. Tendency towards criticism and cruelty must be mended. There is an aspect of self conquest.

Mars opposition Saturn: Pull between action and inertia. Difficulty reconciling the masculine (Mars) with the feminine (Saturn) principles. There is a need to focus on the house placement of Saturn in order to bring the circumstances of that area to fruition and correctly channel said energies. (Hickey, Astrology, A Cosmic Science)

With soft aspects (as well as no aspects) between Saturn and Mars, the individual will find it easier to merge these two energies. However, it takes struggle to establish psychological growth, and the reconciliation of difficult aspects signals a greater potential for development.
