January 2019 Astrology Forecast

January 2019 Astrology Forecast

To counterbalance Saturn’s sovereignty, the new year finds a freshly-forged Mars in its diurnal domicile. As a welcoming aspect, the Sagittarius Moon trines Mars on 1/2/19, exact at 0°54′ Sagittarius-Aries. Thereafter, the Mars-Saturn square is exact at 13°46′ Aries-Capricorn on 1/21/19 (6:27 AM EST), as the Leo Moon separates from its opposition to the newly ingressed Sun in Aquarius. Mars trines the Greater Benefic on 1/25/19 at 16°39′ Aries-Sagittarius. The red planet remains in his domicile until February 14th, when he will exit the Warrior and ingress into his detriment, Venusian Taurus.

Mercury, the fleet-footed Messenger, finally vacates its detriment, ingressing into Capricorn on 1/5/19, where its expression is comparatively succinct and efficient. Mercury’s ingress heralds this month’s first lunation, a partial solar eclipse in Capricorn, the embodiment of Saturnian discipline.

Like Mercury, Venus exits her detriment in Scorpio and ingresses into Sagittarius. In Sagittarius, Venus prepares to conjoin Jupiter, exact at 16°03′ Sagittarius on 1/22/19. The place signified by Sagittarius in one’s natal chart will be afforded amplification, pleasure, and grace, as both benefics unite to bestow the fullest expression of their affirming qualities.

January 2019 Lunations:

  • 1/5/19: Partial Solar Eclipse at 15°25′ Capricorn

Placed in the second decanate of Capricorn, this month’s partial solar eclipse in Capricorn forges Saturn’s signature. With the greater malefic in his nocturnal domicile, the luminaries conjoin Saturn and Pluto. Additionally, the Sun and Moon sextile Neptune, as the Capricorn stellium overcomes Mars via sign-based, superior square. In one’s natal chart, the house occupied by Capricorn will be a focal point of critical laboriousness.

  • 1/21/19: Total Lunar Eclipse at 0°51’ Leo

Occurring near the North Node at its perigee, the total lunar eclipse is placed in the first decanate of Leo, which is ruled by Saturn. For an hour and 2 minutes, the eclipse will encompass the Moon in total darkness, a visible spectacle in the Americas, Europe, and most of Africa. As the final eclipse on the Leo-Aquarius axis, this total lunar eclipse concludes a 2.5 year cycle. The house occupied by Leo engages in a culmination of heart-centered focus that is, ideally, calibrated by its Aquarian counterpart.

January 2019 Dual Cazimi Configurations:

In the King’s Heart

When a planet is ‘in the heart’ of the King, or Cazimi, it is, simultaneously, shielded and strengthened in the commencement of a new solar cycle. The Medieval term Cazimi is the Latin transliteration of the Arabic term ‘kaṣmīmī’, implying ‘as if in the heart’. Essentially, this is the translation of the Greek term egkardios (meaning ‘in the heart’), originating in the works of Rhetorius of Egypt, circa 7th century CE. *There are disparities amongst Medieval sources regarding the exact proximity between the Sun and another planet in order to be deemed Cazimi, with earlier authors attributing a broader 1° value and later astrologers decreasing range to 16’. However, even the 16′ value presents discordance amongst later astrologers. William Lilly, for example, extends Cazimi to 17′.

January 2019 heralds dual Cazimis: Saturn Cazimi is exact at 11°31’ Capricorn on 1/2/19 (12:48 AM EST). As a double-dose of Mars, the Scorpio Moon surveys the Saturn Cazimi at 11°31’ Capricorn, on 1/2/19. Angular malefics accompany the malefic-ruled Moon, until it enters Sagittarius. Since Saturn is naturally in its nocturnal domicile via Capricorn, this Cazimi portal will doubly fortify his structured, disciplinarian sovereignty.

The Mercury Cazimi trails behind on 1/29/19, exact at 9°54’ Aquarius. Comparatively, both Cazimis accentuate angular malefics in their domiciles with a Libra rising, nocturnal chart. Although briefly, Mercury Cazimi affords the stoic clarity of the Saturn-disposited Messenger.

January’s celestial terminal revisits the structured laboriousness that punctuates the Capricorn eclipse. On 1/30/19, the Saturn-Neptune sextile at 14°54′ Capricorn-Pisces encapsulates the month’s necessity for perserverance. An impervious foundation must be cemented in order to actualize the unison between realism and idealism. Otherwise, if quotidian obligations are neglected, Neptune’s allure can only remain illusory.

Mars Opposite Saturn in the Natal Chart

The natal opposition between the malefics, Mars and Saturn, indicates a weighty discord between the impetus of desire and the restraint of responsibility. We need only understand the nature of both malefics to gain insight as to their operative function (within the context of natal opposition). When Mars’ swift severance is halted by Saturn, the primal drive is consistently oppressed by apprehension.

Imagine the sluggish scorch of an expanding fire, where its force is unsustainably dense. While its embers require preservation, Saturn’s slow, consistent pressure is exhausting. Anger and frustration are at the core of this aspect, stemming from internalized hurt and tension. Irritability and tension surges, requiring temperance and controlled separation. Inhibition and rejection (Saturn) are present with this aspect, coupled with a limiting sense of self-value.

Saturn (along with the Sun) is often attributed to the father, and with this aspect (as well as the natal square and conjunction), the native’s early relationship with the paternal figure mirrors Saturn’s gelid austerity. As with all aspects, none should be interpreted in isolation. It is important to consider the entirety of the birth chart, including the condition of the planets described.

The Natal Opposition

The natal opposition, often illustrated as a visual enmity, is traditionally considered more challenging than the square. The natal opposition, also known as the diameter, occurs when planets are seven signs apart, or separated by 180°. As with all degree-based configurations or aspects, the relationship between two planets is intensified according to proximity via degree. Traditionally, the opposition is referred to as adversarial, indicating rivalry or discord. Malefics (Saturn and Mars) are considered particularly challenging in opposition, especially considering that, traditionally, Saturn rules the diameter, or opposition (the Martian configuration is the tetragon, or square).

Applying and Separating Aspects

In traditional astrology, planets applying within three degrees participate in engagement, or coming together. As opposed to separating aspects, applying aspects are considered more potent because they indicate future circumstances. Contrastingly, separating aspects are interpretive of past events. Within the context of the natal chart, applying aspects also indicate, from the moment of inception, the nativity’s future potential.

Mars opposite Saturn

Meaning and Correspondences of Mars in Astrology

Mars represents the spirit of energy, courage, and enterprise. His energy, when implemented strategically, is the polarity of shiftlessness and cowardice. At its best, Mars mirrors the unconquerable energy and potent will of a warrior. This is the necessary masculine energy that initiates and asserts without subjection to reason. Traditionally, as a nocturnal malefic, Mars negates via severance or separation.

Mars (also known as Mavors, Ares, Pyrois, or Gradivus), appears as a fiery star of sparkling color. He is a masculine, nocturnal planet of the night sect. His temperament is hot and dry, choleric and fiery. His approximate course completion is one year and 321 days. His greatest northern latitude is 4°31′ while his southern latitude is 6°47′. [1] Mars has his domicile in Aries and Scorpio, is exalted at 28° Capricorn, sees its depression/ fall at 28° Cancer, and is in detriment/ fall in Libra and Taurus. Mars stations before his 80-day retrograde, and governs the water triplicity (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, respectively). In traditional astrology, Mars is known as the lesser malefic, and finds his Joy in the sixth place. He governs Tuesday, in the first and eighth hour from the Sun. He solely befriends Venus, remaining antagonistic to all other planets.

Mars Opposite Saturn

Meaning and Correspondences of Saturn in Astrology

Saturn (also known as Kronos, Phainon, or Falcifer), the greater malefic, is aligned with boundaries, discipline, and structure. His four main groups of rings, metaphors of limitation, range in temperature from -163 to -203° Celsius. He governs time, is associated with maturity (70+), and is attributed to subjectively negative experiences such as suffering, pain, isolation, and loneliness (reflective of his traditional joy in the 12th place). Just as benefics (Jupiter and Venus) have the power to say ‘yes’, malefics are inclined to negate, or say ‘no’. Saturn denies via rejection or exclusion.

Saturn’s nature is cold and dry, principally melancholic, and of the diurnal sect. Saturn is the traditional, domicile lord of Capricorn (nocturnal) and Aquarius (diurnal), exalted in Libra (exaltation degree: 21° Libra), in adversity/ ‘detriment’ in Cancer and Leo, and in its depression/ ‘fall’ in Aries. His energy may be more or less constructive in one’s chart relevant to sect. His taste is astringent and his color is dark brown (along with grey and black). He governs substances such as lead (in part, due to its toxicity), stone, and wood.

Sun Square Moon

The Sun Square Moon in the Natal or Birth Chart

Natives with the Sun-Moon square (90° angle) configuration in the natal chart are born under a half-Moon, with Luna either waxing or waning.

Although a dynamic aspect, the Sun-Moon square does suggest tension and conflict between the ego and the emotions. Unresolved issues surge between what one wishes to project (the outer expression of the self) and what one requires on a fundamentary level (the inner self, including one’s intimate sense of security). Often, this behavioral pattern parallels environmental conditions present in the native’s early life. First impressions of one’s immediate environment were witnessed as a series of disparate perspectives, usually between parental figures.

Sun-Moon square natives can become enveloped in overly argumentative and defensive relationships, echoing life’s early environment, where relating, compromising, and understanding was challenging amongst adults. While the tendency is to blame past experiences for present conditions and setbacks, this mindset must be relinquished in order to progress beyond the Sun-Moon square. Although challenging, the objective is to release the past and commit to the improvement of the present and future.

Usually, the individual is split into two personalities, where the conscious, willful aspect of the self is one which becomes readily identifiable to the native. However, the more subconscious personality, indicative of the Moon, is more often than not, more easily perceived by the outer world. In other words, self-identification tends to be processed through the lens of the ego (or Sun). The Sun-Moon square, as a result, is expressed by frustration, irritability, and emotional excess, until the full spectrum of the personality is adequately integrated in a manner that is conscious to the native.

Working with Sun-Moon square natives, one notable pattern is that, often, separation or divorce between parents occurs during the native’s childhood or adolescence. Parental figures possess entirely disparate world-views and approaches to life, a fractal that is subconsciously interpreted by the child and, if not mindful, is cyclically re-enacted throughout adulthood.

Sun Square Moon

Max Ernst, Configuration No.16, 1955

The Square Configuration or Aspect in the Natal Chart

The square is a 90° angle with a 6° orb range. Planets in a square aspect share modalities (cardinal, mutable, fixed).

The square aspect is considered dynamically challenging, since its difficulties propel significant work on the issues indicated by the planets involved. Planets in the square aspect are at cross-purposes: their tension can produce frustration, although diligent labor and perseverance can foster triumph. The level of resolution over the square aspect is the result of successful integration of two disparate principles (here, the Sun, our will, and the Moon, our emotional cores). Because this aspect is considered to be traditionally challenging, we look to the signs and places/ houses involved in order to understand where adjustments, integration, and patient application must be employed. Again, with the square aspect, growth is always the result of incessant laboriousness, but this should not suggest that its limitations are without resolve. For the purposes of this article, it is also helpful to understand sect, in order to understand a chart’s diurnal or nocturnal components, and further understand the significance of the planets involved.

* Note: Single aspects should neither be isolated nor fixated upon in interpretation, as the overall chart can demonstrate mitigating or contradictory factors. Instead, a thorough chart analysis will bring the necessary clarity and cohesion of celestial influences.

Meaning of the Sun in Astrology

The Sun represents the visible intelligence and perception of the soul. The solar orb is, in essence, the all-bountiful fire that supports the existence of life. Therefore, the Sun indicates the central, physical vitality and conservation of each human organism. The Sun oversees the ego and moral principles, as indicated by self-esteem and conscientiousness.

The Sun Correspondences in Astrology

The Sun, (Helios in Greek, called amongst poets and historians as Sol, Titan, Ilios, Phoebus, Apollo, Pean, Osiris, Diespiter) is hot and dry, of choleric temperament (considered more temperate than Mars), masculine, and the luminary of the diurnal sect. Placed in the center of all planets, he passes through all twelve zodiacal signs once per year. His mean notion is 59 minutes and 8 seconds, yet his diurnal motion is sometimes 57 minutes and 16 seconds (sometimes more, but never exceeding 61 minutes and 6 seconds). The Sun always moves in the ecliptic and is void of latitude. [1] In Hellenistic astrology, the Sun finds his joy in the ninth place.

The Sun has his domicile in Leo, is exalted at 19° Aries, in adversity/ detriment in Aquarius, and receives his depression/ fall at 19° Libra. By day, the Sun governs the fiery triplicity (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, respectively). The Sun is always direct, and although his pace in movement can oscillate, he is never retrograde. His day is Sunday, overseeing the first and eighth hours. He befriends all planetary bodies, aside from his energetic resistance, Saturn.

Sun Square Moon

Max Ernst, After Me My Only Sleep, 1958

Correspondences of the Moon in Traditional Astrology

The Moon’s nature is cold and wet. She is feminine, principally phlegmatic, and of nocturnal sect. Luna is the traditional, domicile lord/ ruler of Cancer, exalted in Taurus (degree of exaltation: 3° Taurus), in adversity/ ‘detriment’ in Capricorn, and in depression/ ‘fall’ in Scorpio. In traditional astrology, the Moon finds her Joy in the 3rd place. Along with the Sun, she is considered a luminary, and will have more or less significance in one’s chart relative to sect. Her taste is salty and governs silver and glass substances.

The Moon’s General Meaning and Natal Significance

Luna, or the Moon, is a receptive, mirroring luminary that usually absorbs the qualities or characteristics of other planets. The Moon is associated with the body, the mother or maternal guardian in the native’s early life, sensitivity, and intuition. She is oscillating and unstable, referred to as ‘wandering’ in traditional astrology. The Moon is our emotional core, indicative of our needs, in contrast to our desires.

Jupiter Cazimi

img_1533November 2018 Jupiter Cazimi

When in its own domicile, a planet is considered impervious to the Sun’s beams. As Jupiter approaches the King’s Heart on 11/26/18, he will be enveloped within 16 arc minutes of the solar rays. This condition, known as Cazimi, is the Medieval astrological term that defines closely conjoined planets (within 16 arc minutes).* When a planet is ‘in the heart’ of the King, or Cazimi, it is, simultaneously, shielded and strengthened in the commencement of a new solar cycle. In the case of Jupiter, he will be doubly fortified, considering he is already in his domicile.

Jupiter Cazimi (in Sagittarius): Fiery Fortitude

img_1567-1

While Jupiter Cazimi occurs yearly, Jupiter Cazimi in Sagittarius occurs once every twelve years. Exact at 3°56′ Sagittarius, both the Sun and Jupiter are joined in a stellium with Mercury retrograde. The exact Jupiter Cazimi chart, while nocturnal, does have the sect‘s malefic, Mars, in applying square to the Sun and Mercury. Likewise, the waning Cancerian Moon (in domicile) opposes Pluto. The malefic contrary to sect (Saturn), although in his domicile, is angular in the fourth place. In electional astrology, a foundational principle is to avoid placing malefics in angular houses, especially if contrary to sect. Although Saturn is dignified and slightly mitigating Mars via sextile, in a night chart, angular Saturn, coupled with challenging aspects (in this case, applicable to both Saturn and Mars) are fundamental themes to avoid. While there are positive features to this chart, the benefits of Cazimi do not necessarily override its challenges.

The King’s Heart

Considering all three variations, I choose to focus and work within the 16′ range.

November 2018 Astrological Forecast

Never 2018 Astrological Forecast

November anticipates Jupiter’s departure from a year-long transit through Mars-ruled Scorpio (since 10/10/17), and into his domicile. On November 8th, Jupiter ingresses into Sagittarius until 12/2/19. This day’s splendor unfurls as, together, both benefics (Venus and Jupiter) are firstly seen enthroned in their respective domiciles (Libra and Sagittarius, respectively).

The wild blackout of November’s autumnal storms is forged by the blaze of Jupiter and Mars. Here, both planets roam and release amidst each other’s territories. Firstly, Mercury exits Mars-ruled Scorpio, entering Jupiter’s realm on October 31st, as the fleet-footed Messenger ingresses into his detriment in Sagittarius. On November 15th, the exchange between Jupiter and Mars extends as the latter ingresses into Jupiter-ruled Pisces. This receptivity engraves Jove’s jubilant mark into the red planet of severance.

Cleansed of Mars’ murky ink (on October 31st), on November 16th, Venus stations direct at 25º14′ Libra (on fixed stars Arcturus and Spica). Thereafter, in his detriment, Mercury stations retrograde, on November 16th, at 13º29′ Sagittarius (until 12/6/18, stationing direct at 27º16′ Scorpio). The challenging Mercury retrograde is encapsulated in a Sagittarius stellium (Sun, Jupiter, Mercury) come November 22nd, as the solar Centaur gleams in the November sky. The yearly Jupiter Cazimi, on November 26th, is a potent effulgence: the Greater Benefic is doubly empowered, when, in his domicile, he is simultaneously shielded in the king’s heart.

“Him Centaur follows with an aiming eye,

His bow full-drawn, and ready to let fly.”

The Centaur’s Aiming Eye: Jupiter Ingresses Into Sagittarius

On November 8th, Jupiter ingresses into his year-long Sagittarian domicile, where the bow is fully drawn in sweeping flight. This ingress oversees the full expression of the eternal, fiery force of courage, the primal fire reflected in opportune angularity.

Upon the astrological plane, Sagittarius is the mobile unit of the fiery trigon. He serves as the governing force of humanity, and that which oversees the necessity of justly law and order. In this expression, the bow, a metaphor for strength or force, flings its arrows in any opportune direction. This forward momentum of restless energy interminably seeks new modes of expression. Arising from the external plane’s chaos, this expressive reflectivity develops organization. As author of noble charity, the genuine son of Jupiter signifies higher moral character and humanitarian qualities. Upon the astrological sphere, Jupiter is deemed the Greater Benefic, possessing the highest form of human expression and rarest qualities of justice. The Centaur, too, is a symbol of secular knowledge, and its influence indicates external powers of merciful command as a result of its mental organizational skills. Representing the muscular foundation, Sagittarius is the emblem of stability, foundation, and physical power. Overseen by Jupiter, the Centaur’s locomotive star will aid in the yearly amplification of Jupiter’s worldly wisdom.

November Lunations

The November 7th New Moon at 15º11′ Scorpio (decan II) occurs on the day Uranus regresses into 29º59′ Aries. The New Moon trines Neptune, sextiles Pluto, and is poised against the backdrop of Saturn.

The Full Moon in Gemini occurs on November 23 at 0º52′ Gemini (decan I), where Luna opposes Jupiter. Likewise, the luminaries and Jupiter are tangled in a T-Square to Mars. Mercury, the dispositor of November’s Full Moon, conjoins Jupiter, and stirs themes of potential inaccuracy and exaggeration. Equilibrium between ambition and ethics will surge for inspection, as will our necessity for accurate communication.
