Full Moon in Aries 2018

Saturn and the Sun ASTROLOGY

Glossolalia, 2004, oil on masonite, R. Puchol

How do you maintain grace when confronted by the necessary impetus of severance? This intricate equilibrium is at the heart of the Warrior’s full Moon.

Tempering the Black Flame: Full Moon at 1°59′ Aries

Noted by Ptolemy, the stars poised in the crown of Aries hold the mingled potency of Mars and Saturn. Such is the raw force of the Full Moon in Aries, a cautionary tale of polarities that ushers clean slates with destructive denouements.

Aries Decan I

Aries Decan I

The ferocious apparition of The Ram, as a Mars-fueled blaze of willful expression, is benumbed by Saturn’s glacial penumbra in this full Moon’s blackened backdrop. At 1°59′ Aries, the first decan of The Ram is ignited by Mars. Here, Luna spawns the shears grappled by the incandescent fury of the red planet. The Warrior’s natural orders of separation, however, are wrapped in Saturn’s gelid lead.

Moon square Saturn

Full Moon Configurations

The Moon-Saturn square, one of the central configurations of this lunation, poises Saturn, in his domicile, at the precipice of this chart. The Gatekeeper sits upon the tenth (relative to the Moon), in Hellenistic epidekateia, wielding a superior sign-based square. The battle between the Mars-flared Moon and Saturn’s pulverizing rays can spark relational and emotive paralysis, tarnished by Saturnian fear and restraint. Similarly, communication becomes challenging as the recently Cazimi Messenger is now hupaugos, ‘under the beams’ of the Libran Sun (while squaring Saturn). The Mercury-Saturn square halts verbal reconciliation, as Saturn’s dry rings barricade the binding of words. Blinded by the solar rays, Mercury’s rhythmic pace is hastened, as his opposition to Luna blurs cognitive discernment. Challenging Moon-Mercury configurations often oscillate between polar modes of emotion and logic. In this case, Mercury’s combust rationale is filtered through Luna’s emotive lens.

However, for encouragement, we turn to the applying Moon-Mars sextile, coupled with the flexibility fostered by the Saturn-Uranus trine. The Moon-Mars configuration encourages independence, fueling the Mars-driven Moon with courage and initiatory progress that is, essentially, an act in stoic solitude.

Therein is the secret of cheerfulness, of depending on no help from without and needing to crave from no man the boon of tranquility. Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Lunar Mansion:

Al-Sharatain, the Arabic name for the first lunar mansion, is forged in the tropical boundaries from 0-12°51’ Aries. In Mansions of the Moon, Warnock suggests that Al-Sharatain is attributed to the primal transmission and the power of “creation/ destruction, active energy, and dynamic force.” [Warnock, p.40] This mansion cautions against overt force and momentum in personal relationships and friendships.

Fixed Star Deneb Kaitos Conjuct Luna

The Full Moon in Aries conjoins Deneb Kaitos, a fixed star which, according to Ptolemy, is inoculated by the temperament of Saturn. Perched in the tail of the Sea Monster (or whale), Deneb Kaitos, although pioneering, is liable to stir recklessness, violent tempers, and many quarrels when joined by Luna. (Robson, p.162) This second magnitude star, outshining Menkar’s brilliance in the 19th century, is noted by Ebertin to induce “inhibitions and restraints”, both psychologically and physically. Because this lunation finds the Moon squaring Saturn and opposing Mercury (currently under the beams), and, given the significance of Deneb Kaitos, 0-5 degrees of the cardinal luminaries and Acendant (considering sect, as applicable) should remain particularly alert of mental wellness, especially if an imbalance is currently present.

On the day of Luna, September 24, 2018, The full Moon at 1°59′ Aries is exact at 10:51 PM EDT.

Mercury Cazimi

Mercury Cazimi

September 20th, 2018: Mercury Cazimi

When in its own domicile, a planet is considered impervious to the Sun’s beams. For example, while the Sun currently illuminates Virgo, fleet-footed Mercury’s recent ingress into The Virgin remains impenetrably poised, as a result of his domicile (and exaltation). However, as Mercury swiftly approaches the heart of the King on 9/20/18, he will be enveloped within 16 arc minutes of the solar rays. This condition, known as Cazimi, is the Medieval astrological term that defines closely conjoined planets (within 16 arc minutes).*

The King’s Heart

When a planet is ‘in the heart’ of the King, or Cazimi, it is, simultaneously, shielded and strengthened in the commencement of a new solar cycle. The Medieval term Cazimi is the Latin transliteration of the Arabic term ‘kaṣmīmī’, implying ‘as if in the heart’. Essentially, this is the translation of the Greek term egkardios (meaning ‘in the heart’), originating in the works of Rhetorius of Egypt, circa 7th century CE. *There are disparities amongst Medieval sources regarding the exact proximity between the Sun and another planet in order to be deemed Cazimi, with earlier authors attributing a broader 1° value and later astrologers decreasing range to 16’. However, even the 16′ value presents discordance amongst later astrologers. William Lilly, for example, extends Cazimi to 17′. For the purposes of this article, I will be focusing on the tighter value of 16 arc minutes.

Mercury

Meticulous Messenger

Traditional associations of a dignified Mercury punctuate sharp intellect and cogitation. Here, debaters and logicians mastering knowledge and articulation are rendered, as are seekers of mysteries, amalgamating information without external guidance or teachers. Of additional Mercurial attributes, Lilly emphasizes those being “ambitious of being exquisite in every Science, desirous naturally of travel and seeing foreign parts: a man of an unwearied fancy, curious in the search of any occult knowledge; able by his own Genius to produce wonders; given to Divination and the more secret knowledge; if he turn Merchant, no man exceeds him in a way of Trade or invention of new wayes whereby to obtain wealth.”

Since Mercury in Virgo is already in his domicile and exaltation, on 9/10/18, its momentary Cazimi placement will doubly fortify its Mercurial correlations. As a rare and auspicious election, The Messenger oversees cerebral activities involving dexterity and precision, strengthening his associations with critical thinking, judgement, and, traversing the ninth place (see chart election), grants swift and safe journeys.

Ursa Major

Mercury Cazimi on Fixed Star Alkaid

Mercury and the Sun, at 27°34’ and 27°47’ respectively, conjoin fixed star Alkaid, at 27°10’ Virgo, the final resplendent white star perched on the tail of the Great Bear. Although Benetnash (Alkaid) is considered the star of “hired mourners” with the influence of a “Mars-Uranus-Saturn” nature, it is said to grant protection in travels. The Mars-like quality attributed to Ursa Major is pronounced in Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos. “Of the stars in the configurations north of the zodiac… those in Ursa Major (are like) that of Mars.” According to Agrippa in Three Books of Occult Philosophy, the ancients inscribed an “image of a pensive Man, or of a Bull, or the Figure of a Calf; it availeth against incantations, and maketh him who carrieth it secure in his travels.” If one wishes to further implement the protective properties of this star, chicory juice with wormwood and periwinkle flower should be combined with a magnetic stone such as mineral magnetite (lodestone). Specifically, of The Bear, Agrippa ascribes rulership over “the loadstone; amongst herbs, over succory or chicory, whose leaves and flowers turn towards the north; also mug-wort and the flowers of periwinkle…” According to Hermes on the 15 Fixed Stars, this combination repels enchantments, dryness, and grants safe excursions.

Mercury Election

img_1204

The September 20th election is ideal for travel, journeys, and all matters pertinent to the ninth place. Of the ninth, this extends to foreigners and foreign lands, religious associations, astronomy, astrology, oracular decrees, philosophy, and prophecies. Like the third place, where Luna traditionally rejoices, the ninth is the Sun’s joy, emphasizing authorities and sovereigns.

For this election, while the ruler of the first is Saturn, he is posited in his domicile. Being a diurnal chart, Saturn is not the malefic contrary to the sect in favor, and both benefics are overcoming The Time Keeper. As a result, his more constructive energies are capable of manifestation. The benefic of the sect in favor, Jupiter, governs the 3rd and 12th places. While there are no perfect elections, and Mars (the malefic contrary to the sect in favor) can present financial challenges in the 2nd place, both benefics overcome him. Luckily, Mars, in aversion to Saturn, cannot extend his malefic energy to the domicile lord. Although separating, Venus, ruler of the 10th and 5th, is in a square configuration to Mars. Aside from the auspicious implications of Mercury Cazimi, note that the Sun and Jupiter rejoice in the 9th and 11th, respectively.

In the King’s heart, Mercury (Cazimi) is graced with the protective warmth of the solar rays. Additional fortitude is granted by The Messenger’s journey through his Virgoan domicile and exaltation. On 9/20/18 at 3:44 PM EDT, this celestial portal will briefly offer guardianship in excursions, adorned by Alkaid’s fiery light. To commence travels, this is one favorable election.

Moon Square Mercury in the Natal Chart: The Emotive Hostage

When the Moon squares Mercury in the natal chart, the intellect is essentially hijacked by Luna, the emotive sphere of experience. While the mind finds it challenging to cease repetitive thought patterns, it incessantly assimilates information through an emotional lens. I discuss the unraveling of this aspect, its relation to the native’s mother, and offer a few recommendations for its amelioration here.

Virgo Ascendant

“To know the character of the native’s mind, look at the Lord of the Ascendant and Mercury (who is the significator of the intellective power, speech and oration). These signify the matters of the soul, and the morals of the native, just as the Moon and the Ascendant signify the body.” (Abu’Ali Al-Khayatt, The Judgment of Nativities)

The Natal Ascendant: A Chart’s Profile

The Ascendant is simply the zodiacal degree rising over the eastern horizon at the exact time and location of birth. Known as ‘the Helm’ in Hellenistic astrology, the Ascendant expresses the native’s navigational strategy, a metaphorical grappling of the steering-oar of life. Because it reveals one’s interaction with the external environment, unfurling the native’s vitality, health, character, temperament, and corporeal constitution, the Ascendant is a critical feature of the natal chart. As the first house does not fully surface above the horizon, it remains both visible and concealed. Akin to the flight of fleet-footed Hermes, the Ascendant symbolizes the oscillation between the diurnal and nocturnal realms of spirit and matter. In essence, it is the merging point between the macrocosmic and microcosmic hemispheres of the natal chart: as above, so below.

Virgo: The Virgin

Virgo Rising: Mercury as Chart Ruler

The feminine, earthy, double-bodied (mutable) Virgo Ascendant embodies the melancholic expression of nocturnal Mercury. With Virgo rising, the native is analytical, inquisitive, detailed, and methodical in his outward expression. Virgo Ascendants seek to apply the practical side of mercurial knowledge in order to render services. If the objective of mercurial Gemini is to amalgamate information, for the Virgo Ascendant, information must be scrutinized for efficiency and validity. The Virgo Ascendant usually appears reserved and reticent, with a nervous nimbleness in tempo. Because it incessantly strives for perfection in an imperfect world, the digestive system is often delicate.

Of Mercury-ruled natives, Lilly notes:

‘One of high stature and straight thin spare body, a high forehead and somewhat narrow long face, long nose… long arms, fingers and hands.”
Here, Lilly proceeds to describe distinctly malleable nature of Mercury according to its configuration(s) with other planets.

The placement and condition of Mercury in the natal chart guides the direction and purpose of the native’s life, while the body and identity is influenced by transits through the ascendant, natal Mercury, and Mercury retrogrades, and Mercury profections. The house ruler of Mercury also directs the expression of the Virgo Ascendant. For example, if Mercury occupies a sign polarizing its essential nature, such as Pisces, the native may not approach life as a typical Virgo Ascendant. Planets occupying the first house can significantly alter the personality of the Ascendant. The chart’s sect will further punctuate the full expression of Mercury in the natal chart.

Gemini Ascendant

Gemini: The Twins (Castor and Pollux)

Gemini Ascendant: Mercury as the Chart Ruler

The masculine, airy, double-bodied (or mutable) Gemini Ascendant embodies the dual expression of multifaceted Mercury. Gemini is the diurnal house of Mercury, sanguine, and of the West. Gemini Ascendants are naturally inclined to absorb and disclose an amalgamation of knowledge and information. Mirroring the fleet-footed Messenger, Gemini rising speaks and moves swiftly, possess the innate ability to interact with a broad spectrum of people, is strategic in action, and crafty in calculations. Because Mercury has a potent connection to the native’s body, appearance, personality, and physical vitality, Gemini Ascendants are predisposed to delicate nervous systems.

Of Mercury-ruled natives, Lilly notes:

‘One of high stature and straight thin spare body, a high forehead and somewhat narrow long face, long nose… long arms, fingers and hands.” Here, Lilly proceeds to describe distinctly malleable nature of Mercury according to its configuration(s) with other planets.

The placement and condition of Mercury in the natal chart guides the direction and purpose of the native’s life, while the body and identity is influenced by transits through the Ascendant, natal Mercury, Mercury retrogrades, and Mercury profection years. The house ruler of Mercury also directs the expression of the Gemini Ascendant. For example, if Mercury occupies a sign polarizing its essential nature, such as Sagittarius, the native may not approach life as a typical Gemini Ascendant. Planets occupying the first house can significantly alter the personality of the Ascendant. The chart’s sect will further punctuate the full expression of Mercury in the natal chart.
