December 2018 Full Moon in Cancer: The Churning Ocean’s Glint

As a celebratory effulgence, the Full Moon succeeds the departure of the lengthiest winter night. The waxing glint’s culmination occurs as Saturn’s two domiciles, Capricorn and Aquarius, oppose the domiciles of the luminaries. The Crab’s cascade of fluidic light cleanses the year’s darkest solstice, impregnating earth with the seed-essence of microcosmic spirit. Symbolic of the mother liquor or nutritive fluid from which all forms proceed, the full Moon in Cancer heralds the regenerative power of the unseen creative spirit.

In the first decan of the Crab, the spirit’s children, or Twins, are garbed in corporeal vessels. Referenced by Ptolemy, Cancer’s first decan witnesses “the head of the first and second Twins, and the posterior part of the first Twin and his hands…” At 0°49′ Cancer, barely clutching the first arc minutes of Luna’s domicile, The Crab’s first decan surveys the ascension of Castor and Pollux (the Twins’ constellation), alluding to the perceptual acuity and crafstmanship noted by Agrippa. Likewise, the crustacean’s amorous qualities are envisioned by Agrippa as “the form of a young Virgin, adorned with fine cloathes [clothes], and having a Crown on her head; it giveth acuteness of senses, subtilty [subtlety] of wit, and the love of men..” Picatrix’s description parallels Agrippa’s notation of critical perception and mercurial mastery, forged as the “face of teaching, knowledge, subtlety, and of skills.”

Combining Ptolemy’s description with Agrippa and the Picatrix, the children of spirit (Twins) newly emerge in Luna’s domicile, attired with material forms, corpuscles, or bodies. In Cancer, the productile home of the great mother, nature’s eternal recreative force merges spirit and matter.

The Full Moon in Cancer conjoins fixed star Betelgeuse, the potent star at the arm of Orion. Ptolemy attributes Betelgeuse, along with the remaining stars of and near Orion’s shoulders, to the qualities of Mars and Mercury. The position of Betelgeuse, in the right shoulder of the ‘god’, is said to be indicative of clarity and fortitude. Along with its companion stars of the Orion constellation, Betelgeuse begets success, and those influenced by it are considered effective, brilliant and successful. [1] Again, of the Orion constellation, the cluster is associated with martial honor by Robson, while Ebertin notes fortune and triumph. When conjoined with the Moon, this bright red star promotes humanitarian efforts, aspiring to improve the quality of people’s lives.

The luminary opposition, Saturn’s traditional aspect, is a cautionary calibration between spirit and matter. Subterraneous Luna, concealed in the nethermost depths, precisely beholds the Saturnian Sun, as both luminaries polarize the cycles of impulse and intent.

Mars Opposite Saturn in the Natal Chart

The natal opposition between the malefics, Mars and Saturn, indicates a weighty discord between the impetus of desire and the restraint of responsibility. We need only understand the nature of both malefics to gain insight as to their operative function (within the context of natal opposition). When Mars’ swift severance is halted by Saturn, the primal drive is consistently oppressed by apprehension.

Imagine the sluggish scorch of an expanding fire, where its force is unsustainably dense. While its embers require preservation, Saturn’s slow, consistent pressure is exhausting. Anger and frustration are at the core of this aspect, stemming from internalized hurt and tension. Irritability and tension surges, requiring temperance and controlled separation. Inhibition and rejection (Saturn) are present with this aspect, coupled with a limiting sense of self-value.

Saturn (along with the Sun) is often attributed to the father, and with this aspect (as well as the natal square and conjunction), the native’s early relationship with the paternal figure mirrors Saturn’s gelid austerity. Traditionally, the opposition is referred to as adversarial, indicating rivalry or discord. Malefics (Saturn and Mars) are considered particularly challenging in opposition, especially considering that, traditionally, Saturn rules the diameter, or opposition (the Martian configuration is the tetragon, or square).

Applying and Separating Aspects

In traditional astrology, planets applying within three degrees participate in engagement, or coming together. As opposed to separating aspects, applying aspects are considered more potent because they indicate future circumstances. Contrastingly, separating aspects are interpretive of past events. Saturn (also known as Kronos, Phainon, or Falcifer), the greater malefic, is aligned with boundaries, discipline, and structure. His four main groups of rings, metaphors of limitation, range in temperature from -163 to -203° Celsius. He governs time, is associated with maturity (70+), and is attributed to subjectively negative experiences such as suffering, pain, isolation, and loneliness (reflective of his traditional joy in the 12th place). Just as benefics (Jupiter and Venus) have the power to say ‘yes’, malefics are inclined to negate, or say ‘no’. Saturn denies via rejection or exclusion.

Saturn’s nature is cold and dry, principally melancholic, and of the diurnal sect. Saturn is the traditional, domicile lord of Capricorn (nocturnal) and Aquarius (diurnal), exalted in Libra (exaltation degree: 21° Libra), in adversity/ ‘detriment’ in Cancer and Leo, and in its depression/ ‘fall’ in Aries. His energy may be more or less constructive in one’s chart relevant to sect. His taste is astringent and his color is dark brown (along with grey and black). He governs substances such as lead (in part, due to its toxicity), stone, and wood.

The Planetary Joys

The planetary joys, a Hellenistic composition for the seven visible planets, suggest that the meaning of certain places naturally compliments the nature of the classical (visible) planets. When planets are in their Joys, their qualities freely align with the significance of their corresponding places.

A planet rejoices when located in a house that favors the liberal expression of its characteristics. While modern astrology defines houses relative to signs (i.e., the meaning of the second house echoes the sign of Taurus and its ruler, Venus), the Joys suggest that certain planets, independent of sign placement, rejoice in specific houses as a result of complimentary similitudes. While the signification of houses in Hellenistic astrology derives from considerations such as angularity, house position relative to angular triads, ascendant configurations, and the overall symbolism of the house in astronomical terms, planetary joys are also notable when defining houses. Distinctly, the only angular place occupied by a planet in its joy is that of Mercury, as the significations of the Midheaven, setting, and subterraneous places are descriptive relative to their astronomical locations. Likewise, void of planetary joys, the second and eighth are named the Gate of Hades and Idle places, respectively.

To reiterate, the traditional houses are named as follows:

  • First house: The Helm/ Horoskopos (Mercury’s joy).
  • Second house: Gate of Hades.
  • Third house: Goddess (The Moon’s joy).
  • Fourth house: Subterraneous.
  • Fifth house: Good Fortune (Venus’ joy).
  • Sixth house: Bad Fortune (Mars’ joy).
  • Seventh house: Setting.
  • Eighth house: Idle.
  • Ninth: God (The Sun’s joy).
  • Tenth house: Midheaven.
  • Eleventh house: Good Spirit (Jupiter’s joy).
  • Twelfth house: Bad Spirit (Saturn’s joy).

Origin of the Planetary Joys

References to the planetary joys are initially authenticated in the early decades of the first century CE, when contemporaries Thrasyllus and Manilius introduced texts on the houses and planetary joys. [1] In Thrasyllus’s Pinax, later cited by Valens, Porphyry and Hephaistio, there is allusion to earlier sources, such as the pseudepigrapha of Nechepso and Petosiris and Hermes Trismegistus. According to Thrasyllus, Hermes Trismegistus is the foremost source for the documentation of the planetary joys. Thrasyllus attributes the doctrine of the twelve houses to Hermes, who first used the names for the houses and their connection to the planetary joys. For example, Thrasyllus notes that Hermes ascribes one of the first house significations to ‘siblings’. While not in accordance with the later tradition attributing brothers and sisters to the third place, it does correlate with Mercury’s Joy in the Helm, since one of Mercury’s primordial significations is siblings.

Planetary Joys and the Elements

In his article,The Planetary Joys and the Origins of the Significations of the Houses and Triplicities,” Chris Brennan finds correlations between triplicities and house significations. In Hellenistic astrology, the planetary joys surround the four angular triads. In this arrangement, each angle correlates to an element. Of the fire triplicity (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) the Sun and Jupiter encase the Midheaven. To the left of the wheel, Saturn and Mercury, rulers of the air triplicity (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), surround the angular triad of the Ascendant. Mars, of the water triplicity (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces), is found to the right, near the seventh, or ‘setting’ place. Finally, alluding to the density of earth (the triplicity of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), the nethermost angular triad of the subterraneous place is enshrouded by Luna and Venus. [1]

Aristotelian Physics, Stoicism, and the Four Elements

According to Aristotelian gravity, all bodies move toward their natural places. For the elements earth and water, that place is the center of the (geocentric) universe; the natural place of water is a concentric shell around the earth because earth is heavier; it sinks in water. However, if the zodiacal correspondences followed Aristotle’s framework, fire signs would oppose air, and water would oppose earth. Logical inconsistencies regarding Aristotle’s elemental hierarchy made it challenging to incorporate the elements with the planetary joys. Aristotle’s system places fire directly above earth, despite fire’s qualitative opposition to water. In other words, because fire is hot and dry, and water is cold and wet, the two elements should be placed in opposition.

The planetary joy’s elemental system appearing in Valens’ work adheres to the scheme conceptualized by Stoicism, the Hellenistic branch of philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens, during the early third century BC. Of the four elements, the Stoics identify fire and air as active, and water and earth as passive. These divisions mirror the diurnal/ spirit and nocturnal/ corporeal associations of the Joys. The active elements, or at least the principles of hot and cold, combine to form breath, or pneuma, the sustaining cause of all existing bodies. Both Aristotle and the Stoics reject the existence of void space, excluding that it encapsulates the universe. In Stoicism, air is cold and opposes fire (being hot). Moisture is attributed to water, which is opposite to the dryness of earth. In contrast to the Aristotelian system, the Stoics’ conceptual model of the elements parallels the planetary joys.

The Planetary Joys and Elemental Hierarchy

The positioning of the planetary joys reflects an elemental hierarchy. Just as fire rises to the highest region, Jupiter and the Sun are clustered around the Midheaven. Echoing air‘s ascension towards fire, Saturn and Mercury (the air triplicity rulers) appear to ‘rise’ over the Ascendant. Mars, slightly elevated from the earth triplicity, corresponds to water and is located near the seventh or setting place. Below, Luna and Venus encircle the subterraneous place, alluding to earth, the densest element. Essentially, the planets are arranged in an elemental hierarchy as follows:

    The Sun and Jupiter, of the fire triplicity, join the Midheaven.
    Saturn and Mercury, of the air triplicity, join the Ascendant.
    Mars, of the water triplicity, joins the setting, or seventh place.
    The Moon and Venus, of the earth triplicity, join the subterraneous place.

An Overview of the Planetary Joys

A distinct hallmark of the planetary joys is their arrangement via sect. The diurnal planets rise above the horizon while the nocturnal planets set below it. Mirroring his ability to join either sect, Mercury rejoices in the first house, where the midpoint between both hemispheres (using whole-sign houses), unites the diurnal and nocturnal spheres of spirit and matter, respectively.

The concept of planetary joys calibrates the balance between sect luminaries, benefics, and malefics. The luminaries are opposite each other, as the Sun rises in the ninth place of ‘God’, while the Moon sets below, in the third place of ‘Goddess’. The Greater and Lesser Benefics, Jupiter and Venus, respectively, are also arranged in opposition. Jupiter is poised in the tenth placed of ‘Good’ Spirit, opposing Venus in the fifth place of ‘Good’ Fortune. Furthermore, the Greater and Lesser Malefics, Saturn and Mars, obtain the opposing places of ‘Bad’ Spirit and ‘Bad’ Fortune, respectively. Again, Mercury retains the first place or Helm, symbolically merging both hemispheres.

Planetary Joys, Elements, and Angular Triad Correspondences

  • Mercury: The Helm (first place). Mercury corresponds to air and the angular triad of the Ascendant.
  • The Moon: Goddess (third place). Earth and the angular triad of the subterraneous place.
  • Venus: ‘Good’ Fortune (fifth place). Earth and the subterraneous place.
  • Mars: ‘Bad’ Fortune (sixth place). Mars singularly corresponds to water and the setting, or seventh place.
  • Sun: God (ninth place). Fire and the angular triad of the Midheaven.
  • Jupiter: ‘Good’ Spirit (eleventh place). Fire and the angular triad of the Midheaven.
  • Saturn: ‘Bad’ Spirit (twelfth place). Air and the angular triad of the Ascendant.

Planetary Joys: As Above, So Below

As the two hemispheres divide the planetary joys by sect, this bifurcation equally addresses the distinction between the spirit and body. Planets situated above the horizon pertain to matters relating to the soul, while planets below (the horizon) correlate to physical phenomena. When in their Joys, the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn affect the realm of spirit, while the Moon, Venus, and Mars influence the realm of matter (or the body). When in the Helm (via whole sign houses), Mercury has the ability to affect both hemispheres, symbolically inferring his ability to oscillate between both realms.

Of the fire triplicity, the Sun’s joy in the ninth place is traditionally associated with prophecy, divination, and truth as it relates to counsel, religious beliefs, and spiritual guidance. These matters are said to elevate the soul’s journey, alluding to the spirit realm. As the fire triplicity’s Greater Benefic rejoices in the eleventh place of benefactors and confidants, the spirit unites in friendship with a fellow soul. Of the air triplicity, the Greater Malefic’s joy enshrouds the place of confinement, suggestive of Saturn’s potential to afflict the spirit via anguish, enmities, and other mental phenomena.

Opposite the diurnal sect is its nocturnal counterpart: the Moon, Venus, and Mars. Associated with corporeal experiences, the night Joys concretize the spirit realm into matter. Opposite the ninth place of God is the Goddess Luna, the traditional indicator of correspondences, orations, and writers, rejoicing in the place which organically conducts said matters. Here, the abstract realm of spirit (ninth place), as it pertains to divination and religion, is reflected by the swifter luminary, solidifying the metaphysical insights of the ninth place via practical information, and human interaction.

The corporeal realm is auspicious and procreative in the fifth place of ‘Good’ Fortune, bestowing children (implying all forms of creation) and pleasure. These earthly, Venusian themes manifest through the physical vessel. Challenges indicated by Mars’ Joy in the sixth effect the body (contrasting the spirit’s affliction via Saturn’s Joy), manifesting as possible maladies and injuries.

The Planetary Joys: Summary

A planet is said to ‘rejoice’ when situated in a house that benefits the liberal expression of its characteristics. The planetary joys, a Hellenistic composition for the seven visible planets, suggests that the meaning of certain places naturally compliments the nature of the seven classical planets. Clearly, hermetic principles embody the arrangement of the planetary joys. When illustrating the rejoicing of planets above the macrocosmic hemisphere (spirit), a microcosmic counterpart (matter) is mirrored below.

The Sun Square Moon in the Natal or Birth Chart

Natives with the Sun-Moon square (90° angle) configuration in the natal chart are born under a half-Moon, with Luna either waxing or waning.

Although a dynamic aspect, the Sun-Moon square does suggest tension and conflict between the ego and the emotions. Unresolved issues surge between what one wishes to project (the outer expression of the self) and what one requires on a fundamentary level (the inner self, including one’s intimate sense of security). Often, this behavioral pattern parallels environmental conditions present in the native’s early life. First impressions of one’s immediate environment were witnessed as a series of disparate perspectives, usually between parental figures.

Sun-Moon square natives can become enveloped in overly argumentative and defensive relationships, echoing life’s early environment, where relating, compromising, and understanding was challenging amongst adults. While the tendency is to blame past experiences for present conditions and setbacks, this mindset must be relinquished in order to progress beyond the Sun-Moon square. Although challenging, the objective is to release the past and commit to the improvement of the present and future.

Usually, the individual is split into two personalities, where the conscious, willful aspect of the self is one which becomes readily identifiable to the native. However, the more subconscious personality, indicative of the Moon, is more often than not, more easily perceived by the outer world. In other words, self-identification tends to be processed through the lens of the ego (or Sun). The Sun-Moon square, as a result, is expressed by frustration, irritability, and emotional excess, until the full spectrum of the personality is adequately integrated in a manner that is conscious to the native.

Working with Sun-Moon square natives, one notable pattern is that, often, separation or divorce between parents occurs during the native’s childhood or adolescence. Parental figures possess entirely disparate world-views and approaches to life, a fractal that is subconsciously interpreted by the child and, if not mindful, is cyclically re-enacted throughout adulthood.

The Square Configuration or Aspect in the Natal Chart

The square is a 90° angle with a 6° orb range. Planets in a square aspect share modalities (cardinal, mutable, fixed).

The square aspect is considered dynamically challenging, since its difficulties propel significant work on the issues indicated by the planets involved. Planets in the square aspect are at cross-purposes: their tension can produce frustration, although diligent labor and perseverance can foster triumph. The level of resolution over the square aspect is the result of successful integration of two disparate principles (here, the Sun, our will, and the Moon, our emotional cores). Because this aspect is considered to be traditionally challenging, we look to the signs and places/ houses involved in order to understand where adjustments, integration, and patient application must be employed. Again, with the square aspect, growth is always the result of incessant laboriousness, but this should not suggest that its limitations are without resolve. For the purposes of this article, it is also helpful to understand sect, in order to understand a chart’s diurnal or nocturnal components, and further understand the significance of the planets involved.

* Note: Single aspects should neither be isolated nor fixated upon in interpretation, as the overall chart can demonstrate mitigating or contradictory factors. Instead, a thorough chart analysis will bring the necessary clarity and cohesion of celestial influences.

Meaning of the Sun in Astrology

The Sun represents the visible intelligence and perception of the soul. The solar orb is, in essence, the all-bountiful fire that supports the existence of life. Therefore, the Sun indicates the central, physical vitality and conservation of each human organism. The Sun oversees the ego and moral principles, as indicated by self-esteem and conscientiousness.

The Sun Correspondences in Astrology

The Sun, (Helios in Greek, called amongst poets and historians as Sol, Titan, Ilios, Phoebus, Apollo, Pean, Osiris, Diespiter) is hot and dry, of choleric temperament (considered more temperate than Mars), masculine, and the luminary of the diurnal sect. Placed in the center of all planets, he passes through all twelve zodiacal signs once per year. His mean notion is 59 minutes and 8 seconds, yet his diurnal motion is sometimes 57 minutes and 16 seconds (sometimes more, but never exceeding 61 minutes and 6 seconds). The Sun always moves in the ecliptic and is void of latitude. [1] In Hellenistic astrology, the Sun finds his joy in the ninth place.

The Sun has his domicile in Leo, is exalted at 19° Aries, in adversity/ detriment in Aquarius, and receives his depression/ fall at 19° Libra. By day, the Sun governs the fiery triplicity (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, respectively). The Sun is always direct, and although his pace in movement can oscillate, he is never retrograde. His day is Sunday, overseeing the first and eighth hours. He befriends all planetary bodies, aside from his energetic resistance, Saturn.

Correspondences of the Moon in Traditional Astrology 

The Moon’s nature is cold and wet. She is feminine, principally phlegmatic, and of nocturnal sect. Luna is the traditional, domicile lord/ ruler of Cancer, exalted in Taurus (degree of exaltation: 3° Taurus), in adversity/ ‘detriment’ in Capricorn, and in depression/ ‘fall’ in Scorpio. In traditional astrology, the Moon finds her Joy in the 3rd place. Along with the Sun, she is considered a luminary, and will have more or less significance in one’s chart relative to sect. Her taste is salty and governs silver and glass substances.

The Moon’s General Meaning and Natal Significance

Luna, or the Moon, is a receptive, mirroring luminary that usually absorbs the qualities or characteristics of other planets. The Moon is associated with the body, the mother or maternal guardian in the native’s early life, sensitivity, and intuition. She is oscillating and unstable, referred to as ‘wandering’ in traditional astrology. The Moon is our emotional core, indicative of our needs, in contrast to our desires.
