Full Moon in Gemini: Tempering the Twins

Heralding the bifurcation of singular experience, pulverizing the illusory blueprint of solidarity, November’s Luna illuminates the starry Twins of Castor and Pollux. Unfurling the illimitable boundaries of dual existence, Gemini’s urgency stems from the necessity to engorge itself with unembellished, mobile perception. Without time for complacency or dogmatism, Gemini whirls to amalgamate experience, embracing both the chaos and splendor of earth. It sprints past singularity, past the shatterings of solidity, anxiously unearthing the capacity to encrypt life.

As the airy trigon’s initiator, what, then, propels the mutable Twins? Unrestrained by the margins of meaning and interpretation, the raw facts of human perception are Gemini’s ultimate terminals.

The Full Moon in Gemini culminates the tempering of the Twins’ exhaustive mobility. As key participants of this lunation, the double-bodied signs require the calibration of overt flexibility. Piscean Mars, a cautionary sphere of boiling plasma, poises at the Full Moon’s precipice, portending the necessary temperance of ferocity. Disposited by Mercury retrograde, simultaneously under the beams and in its detriment, this lunation heralds the necessity for patient equilibrium and discernment amidst a plethora of options.

Gemini Decan I: The Scribe’s Art

At 0°52′ Gemini, the Full Moon’s decan is surveyed by Jupiter and Mercury. Unencumbered by the material sphere, the first decan of the Twins curiously explores the infinitesimal scope of cerebral consciousness. Agrippa portrays the Twins’ first decan as “serving another”, one that “granteth wisdom”, along with “the knowledge of numbers and arts in which there is no profit.” Unrestrained by earthly gain, a vast cerebral pleasure erupts. Here is the amplification of service through the vehicle of knowledge. The mind’s elasticity is stretched to interminable limits, gorging itself with a broad scope of abstract sciences, arithmetic, literary skills, and craftsmanship.

Picatrix forges this decan as “the art of the scribe, [that of] reckoning, of giving and receiving [i.e., trade], and of the sciences.” Again, in Paul Christian’s History and Practice of Magic, decan I of Gemini denotes an “aptness for unprofitable abstract sciences”. The first decan of Gemini combines the amplified wisdom of experiential Jupiter with Mercury’s amalgamation of unfiltered knowledge. Yet throughout these depictions, the joy of learning excludes material profit: the rare scribe is satisfied with the pleasure afforded by wisdom.

Fixed Star Alcyone: A Starry Inner Eye

At 0°52′ Gemini, the Full Moon conjoins Eta Tauri, known as Alcyone, the indicator star of the Pleiades, and corresponds to the third lunar mansion. A controversial star and the brightest of the Pleiades open cluster, Alcyone forms part of the seven stars in the shoulder of the Bull. According to Ptolemy, the nature of Pleiades is akin to the Moon and Mars, echoing this lunation’s caution against potential injuries resulting from impulsivity. In Christian Astrology, Lilly lists the Pleiades as culprits for ocular issues, a prediction echoed by Robson, Ebertin, and Rigor. According to Brady, Alcyone is also linked to the visionary skills of mystical insight and wisdom. The polarizing extremes of this star can be gleamed, for example, in the charts of Jim Jones and Leonardo Da Vinci, where the former native’s ‘spiritual’ quest is warped in judgmental barbarism. Contrastingly, Da Vinci’s inventions and visual art expand the visionary elasticity of Alcyone.

The industriousness of Alcyone, currently at 0° Gemini, echoes the essential nature of Al-Thurraya, the third lunar mansion whose tropical boundaries extend from 25°42’ Aries – 8°34’ Taurus. Positioned in the Mansion of the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, this mansion augurs abundance. Noted by Warnock in Mansions of the Moon, although Al-Thurayya is a positive indication regarding career-based prosperity, beauty, and creativity, there is a warning against material and metaphorical over-indulgence, a cautionary reference to this lunation’s Moon-Jupiter opposition. Full Moon Aspects

Moon Opposite Jupiter, Mars Square Jupiter

This lunation opposes Jupiter, ferociously emblazoned by a Mars-Jupiter square. While the Moon-Jupiter opposition inspires liberation and voluntary initiation, it parallels the third lunar mansion’s caution against intemperance. Excessive literal and metaphorical desires of the material sphere require moderation, while disputes stemming from the assertion of personal freedom are stimulated. The overt mutability of this lunation can manifest as an anxiously deep inquiry into foundational aspirations. While a disquiet temperament can saturate the trajectory of current goals, this lunation is best occupied by measured contemplation.

The Luminaries and Mars ‘Upon the Tenth’

Both the luminaries and Jupiter form applying squares to (Jupiter-ruled) Mars. With Piscean Mars at the apex of this double-bodied configuration (or mutable ‘T-square’ in modern astrology), extreme flexibility and overt adaptability can unintentionally exhaust the distribution and processing of information. Known as ‘upon the tenth’ in Hellenistic astrology, a planet in the tenth sign relative to another planet forms a superior square. In this lunation, Mars is upon the tenth and in a superior square relative to the Moon. The nocturnal, angular Moon readily mirrors the ferocity of Mars, alerting the surge of possible tensions and grievances. For the discouraged minority (despite Jupiter’s ingress into Sagittarius, as general transits cannot tailor to the exclusive needs of a native’s chart), the Moon-Mars square suggests deliberate and serene action in the face of hidden aggressions.

Mercury Retrograde as Dispositor

Under the Sun’s beams and conjunct Jupiter, Mercury retrograde disposes this brumous lunation from the Archer’s angular stellium. As messenger, Mercury utilizes the electrical energy of thought and the subtle nerve fluids generated by Jupiter. As an oratory lord, Mercury indicates the necessary mental prowess to initiate gnosis. When dignified, Mercurial Gemini is not merely a proficient speaker, he embodies the voice of truth echoed by wisdom. Following Hermes’ wayward waltz, clarity begins to surface by December 7th, unraveling the appropriate path of forward momentum. Currently, this passage can appear bifurcated by the fractals of the Gemini Moon.

The Aftermath of the Mercury-Neptune Square

Seemingly independent of this lunation, the Mercury-Neptune square saturating most of November’s backdrop separates, levitating the fog of deception. As a result, blazing the nebulous veil, scorching through the illusory masquerade of deceit, a myriad of previously occult truths surface. While temporarily discouraging, these insights can fortify the underprivileged to commence anew. Now, the gelid candour of earthly wisdom is a sober reminder of the eternal shift between cruelty and grace. The pendulum sways in rhythmic unison to life’s stoic endpoint.

A Divisive Nation: The Full Moon’s Echo

This lunation’s expression extends its divisiveness to the results of the 2018 United States elections. Held on Tuesday, November 6th, 2018, as the Democratic Party secured control of the House of Representatives and broadened gains at the state level, the Republican Party expanded its presence in the Senate. Indeed, A ‘modern’ nation is uncompromisingly cut at the core by race, education, and region. Increasingly, the U.S. is bifurcated by dual constitutional ideologies and lifestyles. Since 1968, the U.S. has projected a divisive entity, cleaving control of the national government between the Democrats and Republicans. This unyielding polarity contrasts the predominant exclusivity prior to 1968, where the Senate, House of Representatives, and the Presidency was entrusted to the same party per election.

Tethys: The Ocean’s Empress

At 0°52′ Gemini, this lunation’s decan is ascribed to Tethys. Often described as a personification of the sea, Tethys is also identified with Thalassa and Amphitrite. Tethys, whose name is derived from the Greek word têthê (meaning ‘nurse’ or ‘grandmother’) is one of the Titans, and the daughter of Uranus and Gaea. She is the wife of Oceanus, birthing the river gods and three-thousand water goddesses, or Oceanids.Gemini’s illimitable nature, as illustrated in its first decan, parallels Tethy’s abundant offspring.

In Greek vase painting, Tethys appears accompanied by Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth, and her fish-tailed husband Oceanos. In mosaic art, she is depicted with a small pair of wings on her brow, signaling her role as mother of rain-couds. With clouds and the wings on Tethys’ brow, the element air is emphasized, as is its levitating quality (associated with Eurynome, Queen of Heaven). The incremental nature of Gemini’s first decan, as a singularity that branches into thousands (as Mother Creation, in connection to Protogenos Thesis), is repeatedly referenced by Tethys’ children, including the Oceanids and Venus.

Gemini Talismanic Stones: The Agate and Chrysoprase

While Gemini is said to govern striped stones such as Howlite, its talismanic stones are the Agate and Chrysoprase.
The Agate is a variety of quartz found in different colours, often with alternate layers of red and white known as “ribbon” Agate, also of a milky white. The latter can be artificially colored and, as a result, is obtainable in bright greens, blues, and various tones of grey-purple. Additionally, the Moss Agate is considered favorable for the sight, and was once used by physicians when composing lotions and ointments.

Chrysoprase, like the Agate, is a variety of quartz that acquires its name from the Greek words meaning “golden leek,” in reference to its color, which varies from an opaque yellow-green to a light white-green. Its color can fade from lengthy light and sun exposure, but is remedied if dipped in a solution of nitrate or nickel. According to Albertus Magnus, a Chrysoprase formed the Amulet of Alexander the Great, and Chrysoprase was much used by the ancient Greeks and Romans for signet rings and cameos; and also by the Egyptians, who set it with lapis lazuli. The virtues attributed to the Chrysoprase are said to impart cheerfulness, remove uneasiness, and afford protection to its wearers. It also bestows assiduity in good works, removing greed, covetous desires, bringing success in new enterprises, and true and faithful friends. It is also worn as an amulet against rheumatism and gout.

Dioscuri, The Twins, or Castor and Pollux, are the two principal stars of the Gemini constellation. Deemed part divine and part human via conception, the brothers’ dual nature is illustrated via myth. “They were the sons of Leda. Pollux and Helen were the children of Zeus, and Castor was the son of Tyndareus, also the daughter of Clytemnestra.” [8] The true meaning of Castor and Pollux, however, is etymologically derived from the Latin word castus, implying chastity, while Pollux means to defile or pollute. As the self’s bifurcation, The Twins are the dual centers of consciousness.

The cerebrospinal system carries the physio-chemical electricity associated with the energy of Mercury. As messenger, Hermes utilizes the electrical energy of thought and the subtle nerve fluids generated by Jupiter, a combination allocating the necessary mental prowess to deliver gnosis.

Venus Cazimi

On October 26th, 2018, Venus will form an inferior solar conjunction, exact at 3°06′ Scorpio (at 1:05:03 PM ET). In other words, Venus retrograde will closely approach the Sun, transferring, via orbit, between the solar rays and Earth. Simultaneously, Venus will cross perigee, lying on the same side as the Earth in our solar system.

Once per synodic cycle of 584 days, the Sun-Venus conjunction heralds the terminal of Venus’ apparition in the evening sky. This transition ushers her renewal as heoia, or morning star, over the forthcoming weeks. However, celestially scorched amidst the Sun’s beams, Venus will remain invisible until she reaches 6° in distance from the Sun.

As Venus retrograde approaches the heart of the king on 10/26/18, she will be enveloped within 16 arc minutes of the solar rays. This condition, known as Cazimi, is the Medieval astrological term that defines closely conjoined planets (within 16 arc minutes).*

Cazimi: In The King’s Heart

When a planet is ‘in the heart’ (enkardios) of the King, or Cazimi, it is, simultaneously, shielded and strengthened in the commencement of a new solar cycle. The Medieval term Cazimi is the Latin transliteration of the Arabic term ‘kaṣmīmī’, implying ‘as if in the heart’. Essentially, this is the translation of the Greek term egkardios (meaning ‘in the heart’), originating in the works of Rhetorius of Egypt, circa 7th century CE. *There are disparities amongst Medieval sources regarding the exact proximity between the Sun and another planet to qualify as Cazimi, with earlier authors (such as Rhetorius) attributing a broader 1° value and later astrologers decreasing range to 16’. However, even the 16′ value presents discordance amongst later astrologers. William Lilly, for example, extends Cazimi to 17′. For the purposes of this article, I will be focusing on the tighter value of 16 arc minutes. 

Venus Cazimi Election

Notice shift from 12th to 11th.

Ingressed in a sign said to indicate extremes, this Cazimi is unlike that of Mercury in Virgo, where the latter remained ‘protected’ due to domicile. Conversely, Venus retrograde in Scorpio is in her adversity/ ‘detriment’, and, as a result, ruled by Mars, the nocturnal malefic and traditional ruler of Scorpio. Therefore, for the purposes of this election, it is critical to make the best use of this brief Cazimi portal, if one chooses to work with this planet in isolation. As a general election, this is not unfavorable for friendships, organizations, and creativity (or even children). A somber yet responsible presence is framed by diurnal Saturn in the first (in his domicile) while Venus Cazimi is overseeing the 5th and 10th places, respectively. The Moon, as a prominent co-signifactor in traditional/ electional astrology, is exalted at 27°47′ Taurus in the subjectively positive 5th place with reception to Mercury. Although separating, the waning Moon’s nearly exact opposition to Jupiter (27° Taurus-Scorpio) and Mercury, can pose challenges. Contrary to the sect in favor, Mars is, of course, the most challenging energy, poised in the second place at 18°11′ Aquarius. There is slight mitigation as he is overcome by both benefics via sign-based square. Still, this is not a suitable election for finances. Comparing the initial ‘Venus Cazimi’ election (exact at 3°06′ Scorpio) to this latter option, waiting is essential, as is working within a limited portal, in order to actualize the potential of Venus Cazimi in an objectively positive (11th) place.

Under the Beams (Versus Cazimi)

Because of the numerous articles/ posts egregiously using terms such as Cazimi and Under the Beams in an interchangeable format, let us clarify the following: a planet under the Sun’s beams is not Cazimi/ in the heart of the Sun. While a planet is momentarily shielded by the Sun’s rays during Cazimi, it is debilitated under the Sun’s beams, once it has ventured past the 16′ range (or 1°, depending on preferred value).

To note Lilly, “a planet is said to be under the Sunbeams, until he is fully elongated or distant from his body 17 degr. either before or after him.” Here, Lilly is providing his definition of a planet degree range while it is under the beams of the Sun. Note that he extends his value for Cazimi to that of 17′ (as opposed to 16′).

In contrast, a planet is in Cazimi “when he is not removed from him 17 min. or is within 17 min. forward or backward, as the Sun in 15.30 Taurus, Mercury in 15.25 of Taurus: here Mercury is in Cazimi, and all Authors do hold a Planet in Cazimi to be fortified…” In Lilly’s example, Mercury is in Cazimi at 15°25 Taurus, 5′ in value from the Sun.

The purpose of clarifying these fundamental concepts is to deflect the potentially deleterious effects of incorrectly working with the current Venus retrograde in Scorpio. To reiterate, Venus is simultaneously retrograde, in detriment, and overseen by a nocturnal malefic (Mars). This is not an opportune time to undertake new ventures: not only is Venus in a state of introspection and purgation, but her Cazimi portal is too brief to produce tangible results. For the impatient, we notice this actualization come November.
