2018 December Astrological Forecast

Ingresses

The day of Saturn marks the start of December, while the waning Virgo Moon surveys this year’s culmination. Venus revisits Scorpio the following day (12/2/18), as Mercury‘s direct station (12/6/18), also in Scorpio, precedes the New Moon in Sagittarius (12/7/18). Until the twelfth of December, Mercury remains in Scorpio. Thereafter, the Aquarian apogee Moon illuminates Mercury’s ingress into Sagittarius (12/12/18), passing its shadow zone by the twenty-fourth. Venus and Mars remain in Scorpio and Pisces, respectively, until the end of December, when Mars ingresses into Aries, its cardinal, diurnal domicile. Finally, the Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter blaze through the Archer, until the solstice sees the Sun’s ingress into Saturn-ruled Capricorn.

December’s Air-Void

Until the Capricorn solstice, an elemental water-fire combination dominates December’s celestial compass, while an air-void permeates the backdrop. Water-fire compositions develop emotional and intellectual experience, combining perceptual depth with necessary detachment. The month’s persistent air-void, however, can challenge our capacity to incorporate new ideas and maintain objective reflection. As the solstice ushers the Capricorn Sun’s earthy contribution to December’s elemental structure, focus is placed on activity, emotions, and the material sphere. An air-void, however, suggests the omission of intellectual assimilation. Because air’s unifying quality enables swift adjustment to new perspectives (including people), self-analysis and objectivity can be a challenging balance to employ.

The Capricorn Solstice

The Capricorn solstice, on December twenty-first (5:22 PM ET), portends the Sun’s six-month passage. Activating the Northern Hemisphere’s shortest day, the solstice envelops the Southern Hemisphere’s lengthier days with sweltering climate. As the nodal axis bestrides Cancer-Capricorn, its first, partial solar eclipse occurs at 15°25′ Capricorn (1/6/19).

Saturn, posited at the Sun-Pluto midpoint, forges the weight of power in the governmental sphere. Organizations in the public sector, such as law enforcement and police ‘services’, can be coerced to consolidate existing societal ranks. Heralding the Saturn-Pluto cycle, the emphasis is on commerce, an unsustainable economy, and hierarchical structures. Like the bifurcation properties of November’s Full Moon in Gemini, conflict can erupt from humanity’s uncooperative extremism.

Mars into Aries

December’s closure emits the first arc minutes of Mars’ ingress into the Warrior, Aries. In his domicile, Mars in Aries readily possesses the tools to initiate and consummate its quest. Depending on Mars’ presence (via sect, dignity, placement, and aspects), we may experience Mars’ more constructive qualities regarding a specific sector in our charts. Whereas November witnessed both Benefics (Venus and Jupiter) in their respective domiciles, December’s curtains draw with Saturn and Mars (the Greater and Lesser Malefics, respectively), in their domiciles (Capricorn and Aries).

December 2018 Lunations

On December 7th, 2018, the New Moon at 15°07′ Sagittarius conjoins fixed star Hercules, and squares the exact Mars-Neptune conjunction. Disposited by Jupiter, this is the second, consecutive lunation activating a Moon-Mars square. Notably, the last New Moon, at 17°16′ Sagittarius, with Jupiter at 27°45′ Sagittarius, occurred eleven years ago, on December 9th, 2007.

At 0°49′ Cancer, December’s Full Moon follows the winter solstice, calibrating the intricate balance between nurture and achievement. An ameliorating pause from the ferocity propelled from the prior two lunations’ squares to Mars, December’s Full Moon offers unexpected pleasantries, excitement, and reconciliatory possibilities. This auspicious lunation, disposited by Luna, conjoins fixed star Betelgeuse and sextiles Uranus. In the backdrop, the Venus-Neptune trine activates creativity and compassion.

Saturn Cazimi

Saturn Cazimi occurs on the second of January, exact at 11°31′ Capricorn. This Cazimi is opportune for cementing long-term endeavors, provided that we willingly execute the laborious persistence required by Saturn. Saturn Cazimi will be fully explored in a forthcoming post.

November 2018 Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde

Odilon Redon, Ophelia, 1902

Mercury Retrograde

The synodic cycle of Mercury completes a set of movements in approximately 116 days, repeated thrice within the 365-day calendar year. As the sway between Mercury and the Sun reaches exactitude, the triad repetition of this relationship forms an approximate triangle within the zodiacal sphere. Consequently, it is the inferius (Latin for ‘below’) or inferior conjunction that occurs during Mercury’s retrograde motion. Here, the Sun and The Messenger traverse opposite paths as Mercury speeds, with accelerated momentum, past the Sun. As a visual spectacle, Mercury’s retrograde motion is an act of invisibility, synonymous with an oscillating odyssey into shrouded or hermetical realms.

November 2018 Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius

Mercury enters and remains in its shadow zone from October 28th to November 16th, is retrograde from November 16th to December 6th, and completes its post-retrograde shadow from December 6th to 24th.

In Sagittarius, Mercury is in its sign of detriment. Mercurial Sagittarius seeks to rise and separate, in alignment with its hot and dry, fiery elemental properties. In contrast to the unifying properties of water (as experienced via Mercury’s previous Scorpio ingress), fiery Sagittarius is propelled by primal, individualistic needs and instinctive knowledge coupled with energetic optimism. Because of the all-embracing properties of Sagittarius, the challenge of Mercury in Sagittarius is one of discernment between the extraneous and the critical: a task, for example, succinctly executed by Mercury when ingressed in its domicile and exaltation of Virgo. Nevertheless, Mercury in Sagittarius offers opportunity for expanding individualistic expression, spontaneity, and the illumination of wisdom. Its pathway is opportune for the reassessment of our self-expression and instinctual spiritedness. As part of the fire trinity, Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius begins to re-evaluate current sources of creative fuel and inspiration, blazing beyond the accumulated detritus of life.

Mercury Retrograde

Odilon Redon, Strange Flowers

The November 2018 Mercury retrograde heralds the necessity for equilibrium amidst a plethora of options. Scattered thought-patterns are the partial result of Mercury in its detriment of explorative Sagittarius, but the Messenger is simultaneously under the beams (come November 22nd, as the Sun ingresses into Sagittarius) and retrograde, amplifying the challenge to discern between an abundance of possibilities. As a whole, November is gorged with celestial activity. Aside from Jupiter’s ingress into Sagittarius, the nodal shifts into Cancer and Capricorn, respectively, the new and full lunations (in Scorpio and Gemini, respectively), Uranus’ regress into Aries, Mars’ ingress into Pisces, and Neptune direct in Pisces, Venus stations direct on the same day as Mercury’s retrograde (approximately 14.41 hours prior to). Clearly, there is an over-abundance of planetary transitions in the mutable and cardinal modes, and, as a result, Mercury retrograde suggests fully exploring options instead of committing to any singularly specified agenda. This entails patience and the acute ability to detect the essential from the superfluous components of information. While caution should be taken throughout the retrograde period, as with most Mercury retrogrades, the most critical times for transactions, electronic and communicative challenges, transportation, and decisiveness occur during the few days prior to and following the precise retrograde and direct stations.

Venus stations direct 14 hours and 41 minutes prior to Mercury retrograde.

November 2018 Mercury Retrograde Aspects

img_1475

Mercury retrograde encompasses three major aspects (elaborated below), echoing the urgency for clear communication and impeccable honesty. Because the logical mind is enshrouded in emotional and illusory subjectivity via Neptune and Luna, it is imperative to remain immaculate with our words.

Mercury Square Neptune

The centerpiece of Mercury retrograde is the nearly exact (13′ orb) Mercury-Neptune square, remaining within 1° orb from November 13th to November 20th. Having both planets retrograde adds intensity to themes of deception, illusion, and deceit, now amplified by the imaginative stimulation of nebulous Neptune. Tasks requiring concentration, lucidity, and detail-orientation will prove challenging, for the will is embedded in exploring inner dynamics of sensation. Mercury-Neptune can accentuate miscommunication and its literal loss in delivery. Precision is pivotal when an aspect influences potential confusion, especially under the current of Mercury retrograde. Simultaneously, avoiding confrontations in attempts to either ameliorate or maintain secrecy will only escalate pertinent issues. Remaining impeccably honest with our words is the best course of action, as is maintaining clear and realistic communication. Challenging Mercury-Neptune aspects request that reliance be placed on the logical and factual, in contrast to intuitive guidance, as the latter is potentially distorted throughout Mercury retrograde.

Odilon Redon, Girl With Red Poppies, 1898

Moon Square Mercury

The Moon-Mercury square introduces somewhat of a battlefield between the intellect and the emotive sphere. In essence, the mind and the heart become discordant and can hinder reasoning and deductive faculties. This aspect is swayed by the emotive expression, often dominating logical discernment. Again, in the context of Mercury retrograde, this manifests as a critical time in communications, particularly those that involve emotional expression. There is a compelling necessity to express issues, as Moon-Mercury aspects often invite emotional and psychological realignment. Perceptions and the subjective realm can oscillate at this time, which is why remaining honest will be paramount in resolving mercurial issues.

Moon Conjunct Neptune

The Moon-Neptune conjunction further amplifies the emotional sensitivity, potential deception, and perplexity stirred by Mercury retrograde. Not unlike the Mercury-Neptune square, the fantastical realm is stimulated, yet this particular aspect cautions against forms of deleterious escapism in order to avoid health issues. The Moon-Neptune conjunction introduces sincere empathy, coupled with the alleviation afforded by forthrightly expressing issues with trustworthy friends. However, once again, there is potential for misinterpretation, delusion, and dubiousness, as this aspect stimulates the emotive sphere without any realistic foundation. This aspect activates vivid dreams, the general dream-state, and is best incorporated into the production of artistic endeavors.

Mercury Retrograde and the Full Moon in Gemini

The Full Moon in Gemini occurs on November 23 at 0º52′ Gemini (decan I), where Luna opposes Jupiter. Likewise, the luminaries and Jupiter are tangled in a T-Square to Mars. Mercury, the dispositor of November’s Full Moon, conjoins Jupiter, and stirs themes of potential inaccuracy and exaggeration. Equilibrium between ambition and ethics will surge for inspection, as will our necessity for accurate communication.

November 2018 Mercury Cazimi in Sagittarius

img_1478

2018 November Mercury Cazimi, exact at 5°03’ Sagittarius

Mercury Cazimi

When a planet is ‘in the heart’ of the King, or Cazimi, it is, simultaneously, shielded and strengthened in the commencement of a new solar cycle. The Medieval term Cazimi is the Latin transliteration of the Arabic term ‘kaṣmīmī’, implying ‘as if in the heart’. Essentially, this is the translation of the Greek term egkardios (meaning ‘in the heart’), originating in the works of Rhetorius of Egypt, circa 7th century CE. *There are disparities amongst Medieval sources regarding the exact proximity between the Sun and another planet in order to be deemed Cazimi, with earlier authors attributing a broader 1° value and later astrologers decreasing range to 16’. However, even the 16′ value presents discordance amongst later astrologers. William Lilly, for example, extends Cazimi to 17′. For the purposes of this article, I will be focusing on the tighter value of 16 arc minutes.

On November 27th, Mercury retrograde is afforded a brief portal of protection, in exact Cazimi at 5°03’ Sagittarius. The applying Moon-Mercury trine provides necessary psychological equilibrium and emotive insight. Most importantly, this aspects balances the emotional core and rational intellect. In Leo, the Moon receives reception from the Sun, echoing the fortifying properties of Mercury Cazimi. This Cazimi conjoins Jupiter in a Sagittarius stellium of all-encompassing beneficence. To a lesser extent, Jupiter is mitigating the condition of Mars, as it oversees both the second and fifth places. While this is not an ideal election for mercurial work, the Cazimi portal does offer potent insight and strength to the otherwise impaired conditions of Mercury retrograde.

November 2018 Astrological Forecast

Never 2018 Astrological Forecast

November anticipates Jupiter’s departure from a year-long transit through Mars-ruled Scorpio (since 10/10/17), and into his domicile. On November 8th, Jupiter ingresses into Sagittarius until 12/2/19. This day’s splendor unfurls as, together, both benefics (Venus and Jupiter) are firstly seen enthroned in their respective domiciles (Libra and Sagittarius, respectively).

The wild blackout of November’s autumnal storms is forged by the blaze of Jupiter and Mars. Here, both planets roam and release amidst each other’s territories. Firstly, Mercury exits Mars-ruled Scorpio, entering Jupiter’s realm on October 31st, as the fleet-footed Messenger ingresses into his detriment in Sagittarius. On November 15th, the exchange between Jupiter and Mars extends as the latter ingresses into Jupiter-ruled Pisces. This receptivity engraves Jove’s jubilant mark into the red planet of severance.

Cleansed of Mars’ murky ink (on October 31st), on November 16th, Venus stations direct at 25º14′ Libra (on fixed stars Arcturus and Spica). Thereafter, in his detriment, Mercury stations retrograde, on November 16th, at 13º29′ Sagittarius (until 12/6/18, stationing direct at 27º16′ Scorpio). The challenging Mercury retrograde is encapsulated in a Sagittarius stellium (Sun, Jupiter, Mercury) come November 22nd, as the solar Centaur gleams in the November sky. The yearly Jupiter Cazimi, on November 26th, is a potent effulgence: the Greater Benefic is doubly empowered, when, in his domicile, he is simultaneously shielded in the king’s heart.

“Him Centaur follows with an aiming eye,

His bow full-drawn, and ready to let fly.”

The Centaur’s Aiming Eye: Jupiter Ingresses Into Sagittarius

On November 8th, Jupiter ingresses into his year-long Sagittarian domicile, where the bow is fully drawn in sweeping flight. This ingress oversees the full expression of the eternal, fiery force of courage, the primal fire reflected in opportune angularity.

Upon the astrological plane, Sagittarius is the mobile unit of the fiery trigon. He serves as the governing force of humanity, and that which oversees the necessity of justly law and order. In this expression, the bow, a metaphor for strength or force, flings its arrows in any opportune direction. This forward momentum of restless energy interminably seeks new modes of expression. Arising from the external plane’s chaos, this expressive reflectivity develops organization. As author of noble charity, the genuine son of Jupiter signifies higher moral character and humanitarian qualities. Upon the astrological sphere, Jupiter is deemed the Greater Benefic, possessing the highest form of human expression and rarest qualities of justice. The Centaur, too, is a symbol of secular knowledge, and its influence indicates external powers of merciful command as a result of its mental organizational skills. Representing the muscular foundation, Sagittarius is the emblem of stability, foundation, and physical power. Overseen by Jupiter, the Centaur’s locomotive star will aid in the yearly amplification of Jupiter’s worldly wisdom.

Venus Cazimi

E8E5A54F-2BE7-4F34-B727-0A857206D086

Venus Cazimi

On October 26th, 2018, Venus will form an inferior solar conjunction, exact at 3°06′ Scorpio (at 1:05:03 PM ET). In other words, Venus retrograde will closely approach the Sun, transferring, via orbit, between the solar rays and Earth. Simultaneously, Venus will cross perigee, lying on the same side as the Earth in our solar system.

Once per synodic cycle of 584 days, the Sun-Venus conjunction heralds the terminal of Venus’ apparition in the evening sky. This transition ushers her renewal as heoia, or morning star, over the forthcoming weeks. However, celestially scorched amidst the Sun’s beams, Venus will remain invisible until she reaches 6° in distance from the Sun.

Sun-Venus conjunction, exact at 3°06’ Scorpio.

As Venus retrograde approaches the heart of the king on 10/26/18, she will be enveloped within 16 arc minutes of the solar rays. This condition, known as Cazimi, is the Medieval astrological term that defines closely conjoined planets (within 16 arc minutes).*

Cazimi: In The King’s Heart

When a planet is ‘in the heart’ (enkardios) of the King, or Cazimi, it is, simultaneously, shielded and strengthened in the commencement of a new solar cycle. *There are disparities amongst Medieval sources regarding the exact proximity between the Sun and another planet to qualify as Cazimi, with earlier authors (such as Rhetorius) attributing a broader 1° value and later astrologers decreasing range to 16’. However, even the 16′ value presents discordance amongst later astrologers. William Lilly, for example, extends Cazimi to 17′. For the purposes of this article, I will be focusing on the tighter value of 16 arc minutes.

Venus Cazimi Election

Notice shift from 12th to 11th.

Ingressed in a sign said to indicate extremes, this Cazimi is unlike that of Mercury in Virgo, where the latter remained ‘protected’ due to domicile. Conversely, Venus retrograde in Scorpio is in her adversity/ ‘detriment’, and, as a result, ruled by Mars, the nocturnal malefic and traditional ruler of Scorpio. Therefore, for the purposes of this election, it is critical to make the best use of this brief Cazimi portal, if one chooses to work with this planet in isolation. As a general election, this is not unfavorable for friendships, organizations, and creativity (or even children). A somber yet responsible presence is framed by diurnal Saturn in the first (in his domicile) while Venus Cazimi is overseeing the 5th and 10th places, respectively. The Moon, as a prominent co-signifactor in traditional/ electional astrology, is exalted at 27°47′ Taurus in the subjectively positive 5th place with reception to Mercury. Although separating, the waning Moon’s nearly exact opposition to Jupiter (27° Taurus-Scorpio) and Mercury, can pose challenges. Contrary to the sect in favor, Mars is, of course, the most challenging energy, poised in the second place at 18°11′ Aquarius. There is slight mitigation as he is overcome by both benefics via sign-based square. Still, this is not a suitable election for finances. Comparing the initial ‘Venus Cazimi’ election (exact at 3°06′ Scorpio) to this latter option, waiting is essential, as is working within a limited portal, in order to actualize the potential of Venus Cazimi in an objectively positive (11th) place.

Under the Beams (Versus Cazimi)

Because of the numerous articles/ posts egregiously using terms such as Cazimi and Under the Beams in an interchangeable format, let us clarify the following: a planet under the Sun’s beams is not Cazimi/ in the heart of the Sun. While a planet is momentarily shielded by the Sun’s rays during Cazimi, it is debilitated under the Sun’s beams, once it has ventured past the 16′ range (or 1°, depending on preferred value).

To note Lilly, “a planet is said to be under the Sunbeams, until he is fully elongated or distant from his body 17 degr. either before or after him.” Here, Lilly is providing his definition of a planet degree range while it is under the beams of the Sun. Note that he extends his value for Cazimi to that of 17′ (as opposed to 16′).

In contrast, a planet is in Cazimi “when he is not removed from him 17 min. or is within 17 min. forward or backward, as the Sun in 15.30 Taurus, Mercury in 15.25 of Taurus: here Mercury is in Cazimi, and all Authors do hold a Planet in Cazimi to be fortified…” In Lilly’s example, Mercury is in Cazimi at 15°25 Taurus, 5′ in value from the Sun.

The purpose of clarifying these fundamental concepts is to deflect the potentially deleterious effects of incorrectly working with the current Venus retrograde in Scorpio. To reiterate, Venus is simultaneously retrograde, in detriment, and overseen by a nocturnal malefic (Mars). This is not an opportune time to undertake new ventures: not only is Venus in a state of introspection and purgation, but her Cazimi portal is too brief to produce tangible results. For the impatient, we notice this actualization come November.
